Abstract

Disclosed is an optical mode of a reflective color Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that is composed of the vertical three-layers which has a liquid crystal layer and a dielectric multi-layer to reflect a specific wavelength region, respectively. Each liquid crystal layer controls the polarization of incident light on the multi-layer by means of applying voltage.

Reflective Liquid Crystal Display

Disclosed is an optical mode of a reflective color Liquid
Crystal Display (LCD) that is composed of the vertical three-layers
which has a liquid crystal layer and a dielectric multi-layer to
reflect a specific wavelength region, respectively.  Each liquid
crystal layer controls the polarization of incident light on the
multi-layer by means  of applying voltage.

The Figure shows an example of this device.  The polarizer (1)
is on the top, and the angle of the polarization is 45 degrees.
Electro Controlled Birefringence (ECB) No1 (2) is controlled by the
applied voltage to change the retardation from 0 to + pi/2.  Where,
the sense of "+" denotes the (nx-ny)d is positive, the sense of "-"
denotes the (nx-y)d is negative.  Next, selective reflector (3),
which reflects the red wavelength region, is mounted.  ECB No.  2 (4)
is controlled by the applied voltage to change the retardation from
- pi to 0.  Selective reflector (5), which reflects the green
wavelength region, is mounted.  ECB No.3 (6) is controlled by the
applied voltage to change the retardant from 0 to + pi.  Selective
reflector (7), which reflects the blue wavelength region, is mounted.

By selecting the value of retardation for each ECB layer by
applied volt, it is possible to get the gray scale and the full color
capability.  The order of the selective reflector (3), (5), (7) is
exchangeable.  Also, the order of the ECB layer (2), (4), (6...
