General and Context-Sensitive Help in Browsers

      Disclosed is a mechanism that allows Hyper Text Markup Language
(HTML) documents and the Web browser to associate a Help request
mechanism to a specific action.

      This invention enhances the capabilities of the HTML to provide
global and context-sensitive Help services.

      This is provided in the form of a new HTML tag or as an
attribute to existing tags.  This new element has values that tell
the browser what to do in the event the associated request (e.g.,
pressing the F1 key) occurs.

      The subsequent action to be executed by the browser can be
anything within the browser capabilities.  For example, it could be a
URL link to an HTML document that may contain a Java applet.

      Considering that HTML pages are read in a sequential top-down
manner, this new element is used to cover specific areas of the HTML
page, thus, making it context-sensitive.  It also contains additional
attributes to specify a global action and, thus, effectively
overriding the context-sensitive action.

The new tag is named HELP.  An example of an HTML page using it
follows:
  <HTML>
  <HELP ACTION='#GLOBAL_HELP' SCOPE=GLOBAL KEY=F1></HELP>
  <HEAD>
  <TITLE>Example of using the HELP tag</TITLE>
  </HEAD>
  <BODY>
