Abstract

Disclosed is a structure that utilizes Voice Coil Motor (VCM) leakage flux on inertial latch preload of a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) (Figure). This structure can get smaller preload, easier structure, lower cost, and better manufacturability than using a spring.

Inertial Latch Using Leakage Flux

      Disclosed is a structure that utilizes Voice Coil Motor (VCM)
leakage flux on inertial latch preload of a Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
(Figure).  This structure can get smaller preload, easier structure,
lower cost, and better manufacturability than using a spring.

      Especially, this structure is very effective on design of super
low-profile HDDs.  To use magnetic force (magnetic force is
proportional to the distance), it allows the latched enough time.
Therefore, inertial  latch performance can be improved.
