Dynamic Determination of Default "Save As" Location

This article describes a method for an application to
dynamically determine its default "save as" location.

At the time of registration in an object-oriented system, such
as OS/2* OfficeVision, an application has no way to specify that it
wants to use a default "save as" location based on the location of
the container in which the application's object resides.  In this
case "registration" establishes the relationship and supplies the
necessary information  for the application to integrate and work with
the object-oriented system.  An application needs to be able to
specify that it wants to use its current location as a default "save
as" location without hard coding a location in the registration file
or in the application itself.  For example, an application that is
being invoked from a container, such as a file list, will then know
where to save its resulting data.  This will allow the application to
behave in an object-oriented manner.

To solve this problem, a default "save as" location
substitution variable can be specified at the time the application is
registered.  When the application is invoked, this variable will then
be used to dynamically substitute the application's current location
as the default "save as" location.  The default location can vary,
depending entirely on which container the application is invoked
from.
