Automatic Latch Mechanism

      This article describes a latch mechanism which operates
automatically when a unit is moved into or out of a required
operating position.  This movement can be either rotary or linear.

      The design principle is based on an "over the center" spring
mechanism.

      Fig. 1 shows unit 1 which has been rotated about pivot 3 to its
locked position.  Bolt 4 is held against stop surface 7 of housing 2
by the force of spring 6 on latch 5. For unlatching, unit 1 is pulled
back until latch 5 rotates through the maximum extended position of
spring 6 (Fig. 2).
      Latching proceeds the other way round.
      The mechanism has the following advantages:
      o    It is user friendly, as it can be operated with one hand.
      o    It can be readily moved into place without additional
latch operations.
      o    It is moved to its final position and held in place by
spring force.
