Abstract

A problem encountered in electrophotographic hot roll fuser designs is the abrasive wear of the fuser roll caused by contact of the paper detach mechanism. Also, in systems where a fluid (such as silicone oil) is applied to assist toner - imaged paper release, premature failures of the elastomer coated rollers can occur due to fluid absorption. A fuser roll which is resistant to the aforementioned effects can be fabricated from Dow Corning's Silastic J silicone elastomer by the process of liquid injection molding.

      A problem encountered in electrophotographic hot roll fuser
designs is the abrasive wear of the fuser roll caused by contact of
the paper detach mechanism.  Also, in systems where a fluid (such as
silicone oil) is applied to assist toner - imaged paper release,
premature failures of the elastomer coated rollers can occur due to
fluid absorption. A fuser roll which is resistant to the
aforementioned effects can be fabricated from Dow Corning's Silastic
J silicone elastomer by the process of liquid injection molding.

      Silastic J is a two-part liquid silicone elastomer which is
cross-linked via an additional reaction between vinyl and hydride
functionalities, accelerated by a platinum containing catalyst.

      A number of process parameters are critical for optimizing
fuser roll properties.  Critical values and ranges can be determined
for primer type and coat weight, mixing and mix ratio, injection
pressure, mold temperature and time, mold design and post cure
conditions.  All of the above parameters can affect final roll
properties and performance.
