Fuser Oil With Neutralizing And Solubilizing Additives

      Silicone elastomers used in fuser roll formulations can be
filled with a variety of metal oxide powders.  A preferred material
is zinc oxide because it provides reinforcement and improved thermal
conductivity without adversely impacting abrasion resistance.

      Some papers containing sulfite pulp cause defects to occur in
the elastomer surface of zinc oxide-filled formulations.  The defects
occur when chlorinated pitch, a byproduct of the pulping operation,
reacts with moisture in the presence of metal oxide fillers,
liberating hydrochloric acid.  Hydrochloric acid then reacts with the
zinc oxide forming zinc chloride.  Zinc chloride, being extremely
hygroscopic, accelerates the problem by absorbing more water
liberated during the fusing process.  The degraded spots of elastomer
then abrade away from the roll surface leaving small pits resulting
in print quality defects.

      The rate of degradation can be reduced by addition of
neutralizing and/or solubilizing materials to the fuser oil.
Aminopropyldimethyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) added to the
fuser oil (typically, poly(dimethylsiloxane)) can neutralize
hydrochloric acid and prolong the fuser roll life.  Addition of
poly(dimethyldiphenylsiloxane) or poly(dimethylphenylmethylsiloxane)
to the fuser oil can also prolong the life of the fuser roll by
improving solubilization of the chlorinated pitch, allowing it to
become more effecti...
