Abstract

A dual durometer direct access storage device (DASD) enclosure seal is disclosed. The dual-durometer seal is two materials in one seal (see the figure). The stiff section 2 grabs the cover 1 so that the seal does not fall off. The soft section 3 provides the compliance to seal against a base without excessively deforming the base.

Dual-Durometer De Cover Seal for Direct Access Storage Device (DASD)

      A dual durometer direct access storage device (DASD) enclosure
seal is disclosed.  The dual-durometer seal is two materials in one
seal (see the figure).  The stiff section 2 grabs the cover 1 so that
the seal does not fall off.  The soft section 3 provides the
compliance to seal against a base without excessively deforming the
base.

      The two sections are extruded together through one die with a
splitter at its entry.  The two materials are allowed to partially
mix as they go through the die to provide good adhesion between the
two sections.  Two extruders feed the one die, one with the soft
material and the other with the stiff material.

      This concept can be extended to multi-material seals with more
than two durometers for special applications.
