Abstract

The normal hot upset configuration is shown in Fig. 1. This arrangement is difficult to disassemble to perform reworks on the assembly. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement which provides the same strength as the conventional hot upset process but will allow the assembly to be disassembled once.

One-Time Rework Hot Upset

      The normal hot upset configuration is shown in Fig. 1.
This arrangement is difficult to disassemble to perform reworks on
the assembly.  Fig. 2 shows an arrangement which provides the same
strength as the conventional hot upset process but will allow the
assembly to be disassembled once.

      The member to be attached 1 is placed over the pins 2A on the
base part 2.  A small washer or spacer 3 is placed over the pins.
The pins are then upset to retain the attached member.  If a
disassembly for rework is required, the enlarged portion of the pin
is removed, the washer is discarded, the member is replaced over the
pins and the pins are then hot upset as a normal configuration to
retain the member.
