Abstract

A plastic-coated rod is coiled with a beryllium copper wire to form a dense but non-shorting coil. The beryllium copper wire is fixed to the rod by a second plastic coating such that the inner and outer plastic layers melt together at their interfaces, yielding a uniform gapless plastic layer. The top and the bottom of the coiled rod are shaved off, leaving a rod with a multitude of single closely spaced beryllium copper wires. This beryllium copper equipped rod forms the connector to interconnect electrical devices with closely spaced pads.

Rod-shaped Connector

      A plastic-coated rod is coiled with a beryllium copper
wire to form a dense but non-shorting coil.  The beryllium copper
wire is fixed to the rod by a second plastic coating such that the
inner and outer plastic layers melt together at their interfaces,
yielding a uniform gapless plastic layer. The top and the bottom of
the coiled rod are shaved off, leaving a rod with a multitude of
single closely spaced beryllium copper wires.  This beryllium copper
equipped rod forms the connector to interconnect electrical devices
with closely spaced pads.

      The coil winding of the beryllium copper wire provides
precisely spaced contacts.  In addition, it provides rigidity and
temperature stability for the connector.  If chosen to match the
components to be interconnected, it is also suitable for controlling
the thermal coefficient of expansion.  The rod may be made of 2
separate parts with different thermal coefficients of expansion, each
part matching one coefficient to guarantee very tight dimensions and
tolerances.  Ceramic material, steel, fiberglass, etc., may be
selected for the rod.

      The dimensions may be chosen such that each piece of wire
interconnects only 2 pads or that several wires interconnect 2 pads.
The signal interconnection of one connector side may be shielded by
the other side when used for powering.
