Abstract

This article describes how to provide initialization, persistence, and termination processing in a Client/Server transaction program environment. To provide robust performance it is necessary to remove the initialization and termination processing from the individual transaction program and place it at start-up and shut-down of the environment. The persistence of data in memory prevents individual programs from having to read and write data at the start and end of each processing period.

Environment Facility/MVS: Function And Structure

This article describes how to provide initialization,
persistence, and termination processing in a Client/Server
transaction program environment. To provide robust performance it is
necessary to remove the initialization and termination processing
from the individual transaction program and place it at start-up and
shut-down of the environment. The persistence of data in memory
prevents individual programs from having to read and write data at
the start and end of each processing period.

In OfficeVision*/2 (OV/2) there exists two processes which
provide these functions:  Office Global Platform (OGP) and Office
Initialization Termination (OIT). In order to provide these functions
in OfficeVision/MVS it is necessary to provide a place for these
processes to occur outside the transaction environment. The
Environment Facility/MVS is a started task with multi-tasking
capability. It is responsible for the initialization and termination
of the Office Environment within MVS.  It is the owner of the global
Persistent Storage Mechanism. EF has multi-tasking capability in
order to be able to communicate to the operator or take recovery
action in case of abnormal termination of the initialization phase.
It is the owner of the Global Office Control Block, where all Office
transaction programs can locate Office Services. This also provides
the capability to termination the Office environment.  It provides
the enviro...
