Abstract

This article describes an architecture for providing an object-oriented mail filtering system for OfficeVision*. The OfficeVision desktop provides an electronic mail system which handles document distribution between multiple users. A mail filtering system would provide additional functions for automatically processing mail on behalf of a user. A mail filtering system would perform most of the mail-related tasks that are now performed by a user, such as printing, filing, forwarding and deletion of items in the In-basket.

Smartmail Agent for the OfficeVision Desktop

This article describes an architecture for providing an
object-oriented mail filtering system for OfficeVision*. The
OfficeVision desktop provides an electronic mail system which handles
document distribution between multiple users. A mail filtering system
would provide additional functions for automatically processing mail
on behalf of a user.  A mail filtering system would perform most of
the mail-related tasks that are now performed by a user, such as
printing, filing, forwarding and deletion of items in the In-basket.

The mail filtering system would be implemented as a toolkit of
intelligent agents.  Smartmail is an object-oriented production rule
system with rules defined by the user.  The toolkit would contain a
basic set of generic rule-based agents which could be instructed to
perform mail processing.  The user could create an agent by
describing a task and defining a set of rules for handling the task.
A template- based interface to the agent would enable the user to
create and change rules without having to know a programming
language.  A user would create rules by entering data or selecting
data from an agent's template.

The Smartmail Agent and Toolkit enhances the base OfficeVision
platform by providing automated intelligent mail processing
capability for the business professional user.  A generic
template-based toolkit makes it easy for a user to create and change
his agents and...
