Abstract

The attack of chlorofluorocarbons on the earth's ozone layer has prompted immediate reduction and elimination plans for the use of FREON* in IBM. These reductions and elimination plans include the replacement of FREON base parts cleaners with alternative methods of cleaning. One popular alternative solvent being used in IBM is deionized water. In most cases, IBM is using an aqueous parts cleaner with deionized water and clean hot air to wash and dry parts. This cover has been designed from the results of experimentation on washing and drying head and arm assembly parts in open-face wash tanks and hot-air drying tanks with a material-handling system. The cover is attached to and travels with the material handler as parts are transported from tank to tank.

of cleaning.  One popular alternative solvent being used in IBM is

cover has been designed from the results of experimentation on
washing and drying head and arm assembly parts in open-face wash

helps reduce noise caused by air drying and ultrasonics.  It also
reduces heat loss and evaporation in the process tanks.

      This cover is designed to be used on all open-face aqueous
parts cleaners which use a material-handling system to transport
parts into a series of open face cleaning and drying tanks.  The
cover is attached to and moves with the material-handling system to
allow for the transport of parts from one tank to the next in the
cleaning cycle.  The cover is designed with slots to permit the
material handler to undulate a basket or part up and down within the
