Enhanced Partial Store

      A method is proposed for partial store operations which
allows a correction cycle to be ignored for locations in an ECC word
which are going to to changed.

      With conventional memory ECC implementation, the ECC facility
normally processes a correction cycle for any errors in an ECC word.
Partial store cycles only modify a part of the ECC word.  This
proposal groups the correctable errors into two groups.  The first
group consists of those that must be corrected because the data
locations are not being changed, and a second group that can be
ignored because the memory locations are going to be changed.  The
system performance is enhanced for those partial store operations
with correctable errors which can be ignored.

      Fig. 1 is a flow chart which describes the operation of a
conventional ECC facility which operates with partial stores.  Fig. 2
shows a modified flow chart for this proposal for ignoring
correctable er rors in locations which are going to be modified
because the operations are partial stores.
