Abstract

As can be determined from the name, this device is designed to extract groundwater samples without compromising the original ambient conditions of the sample. It also serves as a container to transport and store groundwater samples without changing their integrity during the transport and storage period. Finally, when fitted with the proper sensors, this device may be used to continuously monitor physical and chemical parameters of groundwater flowing through the bore hole.

Discrete Depth Groundwater Sampler, Sample Container And Monitor

      As can be determined from the name, this device is
designed to extract groundwater samples without compromising the
original ambient conditions of the sample.  It also serves as a
container to transport and store groundwater samples without changing
their integrity during the transport and storage period.  Finally,
when fitted with the proper sensors, this device may be used to
continuously monitor physical and chemical parameters of groundwater
flowing through the bore hole.

      The sampler is modular in construction.  The sampler has four
valves, a sample chamber, cable connectors for lowering and raising
the sampler and a sample ejection plunger rod.  See the figure.  The
sampler has two electrically operated solenoid valves, one manually
operated, and a quick disconnect valve that is closed in the
disconnect position. The manual valve is located between the sample
chamber and the electrically operated intake valve. The other
electrically operated valve is located at the opposite end of the
sample chamber and is connected to the quick disconnect valve.  The
sampler is 1-7/8 inches in diameter and can fit into a 2-inch
diameter well pipe.

      During sampling the manual and quick disconnect valves are kept
in the open position.  The electrically operated valves are opened
only when the sampler is at the proper depth to receive a sample.  At
