Concave Ribbon Guide

Disclosed is an invention which significantly improves ribbon
wear, tracking and loading by using molded curved concave surfaces to
position, track and control the ribbon.

In the figure, when the ribbon cartridge is positioned in the
printer, the ribbon lies on top of the printhead at position 2, and
next to the ribbon guide at positions 1 and 3.  As the printhead
and/or the ribbon starts to move, the ribbon will automatically move
to position 5, and is located by the shield at position 4 and 6.
Ribbon loading is improved because the ribbon path 4 - 5 - 6
represents a significantly shorter distance than the initial ribbon
path 1 - 2 - 3, and therefore represent the path of least resistance.
Ribbon tracking is improved because the ribbon self centers itself in
the concave curved surfaces.  Ribbon wear is improved because the
shield does not require any non-smooth edges or protrusion to
position and/or retain the ribbon.

An additional advantage of increased ribbon life can be
achieved by positioning the concave surface centerline at position 4
above the nominal print line, and by positioning the concave surface
centerline at position 6 below the nominal printline.  This will
cause the ribbon to dither up and down as the printhead travels,
thereby extending ribbon life.
