Fixture for Rapid Compatibility Testing of Plastic Materials

      Disclosed is a fixture which allows rapid determination
of the compatibility of plastic materials with lubricants, adhesives
or other substances.

      As shown in the figure, the fixture applies a known flexural
strain to standard 1/2" x 5" x 1/8" bar samples of the plastic
material of interest.  A small amount of the potentially incompatible
substance is applied to the highly stressed central region of the
plastic bars.  Using an applied flexural strain corresponding to
one-half the yield strain of the plastic material, long-term
compatibility issues will be identified by failure (cracking,
crazing, etc.) within 48 hours.

      The utility of this fixture has been demonstrated in a recent
study (*).  Both the above method and conventional elevated
temperature immersion tests were conducted.  The rapid determination
provided by the flexural strain fixture was found to be more
sensitive to compatibility problems than was the companion six-week
elevated temperature immersion study.
