Cooperative Web Navigation System for Blind and Sighted People

Disclosed is a cooperative Web navigation system for blind
and sighted persons using a single computer.  While a blind person is
netsurfing with this system, a sighted person can help by watching
the screen or can work with an entirely different application.

This is possible because the blind person uses only a numeric
keypad with this system, and the system accepts input from the keypad
even when the application is running in a background window.

The Figure shows the configuration of the system.  Program (1)
and (2) are linked by Dynamic Data Exchange.  This system allows the
user to choose one of two modes by selecting either the automatic or
the manual link method.  The automatic method synchronizes the
program (1)  and (2).  In this way, a blind person does not need to
operate the system, since voice output is available with the program
(1).

The manual method uses the program (1) and (2)
independently.  When a blind person is netsurfing, the computer
display, keyboard, and mouse are not needed, so a sighted person can
use them to  operate the program (1) independently.

The program (1) can be changed to any other application.  For
example, this system can be adopted at schools for the blind, since
it is designed to make it easy for teachers to explain non-visually
to beginners how to surf the net.
