Abstract

Current software applications make extensive use of pictographic and ideographic icons. Microsoft's Icon Editor and the Storyboard* Plus application are perhaps the most widely used graphics editors used to design software icons. Neither these or any other icon editor provides graphics designers or software engineers a means of simultaneously displaying or comparing multiple icon designs under user-defined or user-specified background screen conditions, which is an important step in the process in the design and testing of graphical user interfaces. This article discloses a software tool that provides a means of greatly enhancing the utility, functionality and usability of current icon editing tools. The tool can be used alone or could be incorporated into an icon editor.

Multiple Icon Viewing Design Tool

      Current software applications make extensive use of
pictographic and ideographic icons.  Microsoft's Icon Editor and the
Storyboard* Plus application are perhaps the most widely used
graphics editors used to design software icons. Neither these or any
other icon editor provides graphics designers or software engineers a
means of simultaneously displaying or comparing multiple icon designs
under user-defined or user-specified background screen conditions,
which is an important step in the process in the design and testing
of graphical user interfaces.  This article discloses a software tool
that provides a means of greatly enhancing the utility, functionality
and usability of current icon editing tools.  The tool can be used
alone or could be incorporated into an icon editor.

      The Multiple Icon Design Viewing Tool (MIDVT) is a software
application tool that was developed to work in conjunction with the
Microsoft Icon Editor facility provided in the OS/2* (V1.2) TOOLKIT
package.  The MIVDT application provides users with a simple and
convenient means of: 1) selecting and simultaneously displaying up to
30 icon pictographs that were created and stored as ***ICO files by
the Microsoft Icon Editor (V1.2) on a single screen; 2) arranging and
moving the selected icon images to any desired location within the
application tools' window for simultaneous comparison and viewing; 3)
presenting each of the displayed icons with or without their
associated names as they would actually appear in a given
application; 4) changing, modifying or eliminating the title or name
of the icon that is displayed beneath each icon shown on the screen;
5) adjusting the background color of the window on which the icons
are displayed to black, white, gray or any RGB color value desired;
6) enabling or disenabling the system transparency function to allow
icons to be shown with or without background color being shown, and;
7) expand...
