Connector With Liquid Contact Connection for Silicon-Based Packaging

      A connector with liquid contact connection for
silicon-based packaging is described which is produced by known
methods from silicon and thus has a very high contact density.

      The special characteristic of the connector is that the
contact, in lieu of being made up of resilient contact tongues, pins,
clips, etc., is produced by means of a conductive liquid, such as
polyethylene or mercury.  The conductive liquid is contained in a
recess sealed by a foil. During plugging, a hollow needle pierces the
foil, filling up with conductive liquid by the capillary effect.  The
described contact is extremely reliable, as contamination and
corrosion are avoided.

      Fig. 1 shows a contact element, consisting of a plug A and a
socket B, prior to plugging.  As illustrated in Fig. 1, plug A has a
hollow needle 1 expanding inside and terminating in a chamber 6.  Its
counterpiece (socket B) has a recess 3 which is filled with
conductive liquid and hermetically sealed by a foil 2.

      When the contact element is closed (Fig. 2), hollow needle 1
pierces foil 2.  In response to the capillary effect, needle 1 fills
with conductive liquid up to the expanded portion 7.  Hollow needle 1
and recess 3 are metal-coated on their inside, establishing a
reliable electrical connection between plug wiring 4 and socket
