Abstract

SQL queries sometimes require complex row conditions in order to join data across multiple tables and to define the appropriate information to limit the retrieval of data. In visual queries this information may be represented in a tree structure in an associated window. If the window is sized according to the number of conditions and structure of the tree, it may become necessary for the window to scroll in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Only viewing part of the conditions may be confusing to the user since the conditions are related in some manner. This article describes a way to use an additional window to navigate through an associated window.

Navigation Through a Complex Graphical Structure

SQL queries sometimes require complex row conditions in
order to join data across multiple tables and to define the
appropriate information to limit the retrieval of data.  In visual
queries this information may be represented in a tree structure in an
associated window.  If the window is sized according to the number of
conditions and structure of the tree, it may become necessary for the
window to scroll in both the horizontal and vertical directions.
Only viewing part of the conditions may be confusing to the user
since the conditions are related in some manner.  This article
describes a way to use an additional window to navigate through an
associated window.

Referring to the figure, a primary window will contain the
entire query object.  An associated window (Row Conditions) will
contain the tree structure for the row conditions in the query.  This
window will be scrollable in both the horizontal and vertical
directions.  Another window (Structure) associated with the row
condition may be displayed by the user by clicking on a mini-icon in
the window border.  The structure window associated with the row
conditions window will display a small version of the actual tree
structure.  This gives the user an overall picture of the structure
relationship of the row conditions while all the information may not
be legible.  This structure window would show a frame around the area
that is displayed in...
