Abstract

Disclosed is an invention which simplifies network configuration diagrams. A concept, called a connection class, is introduced to help group workstations. A connection class is a group of workstations which use the same connection hardware and communication protocol to connect to a network of computers. Groups of computers which belong to the same connection class and are connected to the same system can be pictorially represented by a single icon, reducing the total amount of screen space which is required to graphically display the entire network.

      Disclosed is an invention which simplifies network
configuration diagrams.  A concept, called a connection class, is
introduced to help group workstations.  A connection class is a group
of workstations which use the same connection hardware and
communication protocol to connect to a network of computers.  Groups
of computers which belong to the same connection class and are
connected to the same system can be pictorially represented by a
single icon, reducing the total amount of screen space which is
required to graphically display the entire network.

      Figure 1 is an example of a simple network.  This network uses
the client server model. Figure 2 shows the same network, using the
connection class concept.

      Connection classes are shown with double lines.  Icons, shapes,
or colors might also be used to distinguish connection classes from
single entities.  Redundant information pertaining to multiple
network nodes in the same connection class is no longer needed.  The
display is greatly simplified.
