Compact Output Rectifier Snubber for Switching Regulators

Disclosed is a compact, low inductance, easily aligned snubber
to fit the standard dual diode power tap package (output rectifier).

Switching regulator designs use resistor-capacitor snubbers
across the output rectifiers.  The snubbers are required to limit the
peak reverse voltage across the output rectifier and to reduce the
high frequency harmonic content of the diode voltage ringing.  This
is necessary to protect the diodes from reverse avalanche and to
reduce high frequency radiated noise due to rectifier switching.

As shown in the drawing, this compact snubber consists of a
flex circuit 1 formed to fit the standard output rectifier package
using the same mounting/connecting screws, providing easy
installation and alignment.  The flex circuit 1 is a copper foil with
Kapton* (Trademark of E. I. Dupont De Nemours & Co.) insulation in
the area designated by phantom lines and tin plating on the
connection tabs.  The copper foil with its short length and high
conductor width to thickness ratio yields a low inductance high
performance snubber.  The resistor 2 and capacitor 3 are soldered
into the flex circuit 1, providing an easily manufactured low
resistance connection.  Values for the resistor 2 and capacitor 3 are
selected based on the specific application and soldered in place.
The assembly can also be  adapted to surface mount technology and/or
deposited film resistor techno...
