Abstract

Surface Visualizer is a tool for use by engineering, product assurance, and manufacturing to process the manufacturer's defect data for high-capacity, fixed disk drives. The graphic capabilities of a personal computer high-resolution color display are used to present surface defects in a graphic form. The primary method of display is a scale representation of a disk surface with all defects occurring on that surface in a highlighted color.

Surface Visualizer - Bar Distribution Feature

Surface Visualizer is a tool for use by engineering,
product assurance, and manufacturing to process the manufacturer's
defect data for high-capacity, fixed disk drives.  The graphic
capabilities of a personal computer high-resolution color display are
used to present surface defects in a graphic form.  The primary
method of display is a scale representation of a disk surface with
all defects occurring on that surface in a highlighted color.

A significant measure of the manufacturing process is the
distribution of defects from surface to surface and by size.  For
instance, assembly damage causes a small number of large defects
while plating process problems cause a large number of tiny defects.
Large variations between surfaces on the same file indicate an
inconsistent process. This distribution is not apparent from the
defect listings provided by the disk manufacturer.

A mode in the Surface Visualizer program provides two color
displays that summarize the defect list by size and number per
surface (Fig. 1) and by summed size over all surfaces (Fig. 2).

Examination of these graphs provides the user with a quick
evaluation of the overall disk quality and locates inconsistencies to
be further examined using other features of the program.
