Abstract

Information exchange between the program and channel subsystem is generally initiated by the program. For this reason there is an abundance of architecture to facilitate program-initiated communication. As the channel subsystem and the network it services has grown more complex, the need for a general, channel subsystem initiated communication path has become increasingly important.

Means for Channel Subsystem-Initiated Communication

Information exchange between the program and channel
subsystem is generally initiated by the program.  For this reason
there is an abundance of architecture to facilitate program-initiated
communication.  As the channel subsystem and the network it services
has grown more complex, the need for a general, channel subsystem
initiated communication path has become increasingly important.

The following proposal provides a means for channel subsystem
communication which is suitable for a variety of data formats, sizes,
and sources.  The proposal includes a data structure (called the
event-information queue), a means for initiating the communication
(called the event-information-pending channel report) and a mechanism
for obtaining information (called the store-event information
command).

The event-information queue provides means for collecting a
number of channel subsystem-initiated messages which may be of
different size and format.  The source of the messages may be the
channel subsystem, a sub-component of the channel subsystem, or a
device attached to the channel subsystem.  The queue structure allows
for a multitude of messages which can be processed in the order in
which they were generated.

The event-information-pending channel report is used to signal
the program that information is available on the event queue.  The
advantage of using the event-information-pending chann...
