Abstract

Described is a display data stream handshaking method between a host processor and Work Station Controller (WSC) with attached Non-Programmable Terminals (NPTs). Applications running on the host processor can determine whether the WSC should return entry field data from the NPT screen when the user presses the Help key.

Programmable Help Key On a Dependent Work Station

Described is a display data stream handshaking method
between a host processor and Work Station Controller (WSC) with
attached Non-Programmable Terminals (NPTs). Applications running on
the host processor can determine whether the WSC should return entry
field data from the NPT screen when the user presses the Help key.

A WSC provides attachment of multiple NPTs to a host processor.
The flow of display data streams between a host processor and a WSC
and NPT commands between a WSC and an NPT is shown in the figure.

An outbound display stream (host to WSC) typically defines the
terminal screen, and entry field locations and sizes for an NPT.  An
inbound display data stream (WSC to host) typically defines the
keystroke which caused the inbound data stream and entry field data.
The WSC returns entry field data for most keystrokes which cause an
inbound data stream; however, a few do not (for example, Help, Print,
Clear, PA1, and PA2).

The output display data stream has a Write to Display order
called Start of Header (SOH) which defines such things as error line
location.  A byte within the SOH contains bit flags; a previously
undefined bit flag within the SOH order will provide the capability
for an application to define if the Help key should return entry
field data.  The SOH order is optional in an output display data
stream.  The new flag will indicate whether or not to return en...
