Direct Access Storage Device Adapter Tray to Fit a 3.5-Inch DASD

      This article describes an adapter tray which allows
mounting any 3.5" DASD device in a 5.25" DASD bay.  Also, the tray is
designed such that a feature bezel can be mounted to fill the gap
difference between a 3.5" DASD and a 5.25" DASD.

      In the drawing, Fig. 1 is an exploded isometric view which
illustrates a DASD expansion box DASD frame housing as viewed from
above, to the front, and to the right.  It shows how the 3.5" DASD
adapter tray expands the expansion box option versatility.

      Fig. 2 illustrates an exploded isometric view of the assembly
of a 3.5" DASD and adapter tray as viewed from above, to the front,
and to the right.  It also illustrates how a feature bezel is snapped
in to fill the gap between a 5.25" DASD device with a bezel and a
3.5" DASD device without a bezel.

      Figs. 3a, 3b and 3c are detailed views of the expansion box
DASD frame housing and the 3.5" DASD assembly installed. Fig. 3c
shows the adapter tray's grounding contact to the expansion box DASD
frame housing looking from the top.

      In reference to Fig. 1, the expansion box DASD frame housing
primarily consists of the DASD frame structure 1, and either of the
DASD assemblies 2 and 3 shown.  The DASD frame housing has one bay
that supports a 5.25" half-high DASD 2 with its own bezel.  Fig. 1
