Abstract

A method is disclosed for producing a good quality, temporary electrical contact over a large surface area. Contact is made by inserting a fine metal mesh between the two surfaces requiring temporary electrical contact. The mesh should be made from a hard metal, such as stainless steel, and plated with gold to minimize corrosion. The contact mesh is shown in the Figure. The weave of the mesh produces high and low areas (approximating point contact) that, when under pressure, will penetrate the mating surfaces. The externally applied pressure could be supplied by mechanical means (screws, levers, or hydraulic press), air pressure, and/or vacuum. The mesh is particularly amenable to use with a vacuum hold-down scheme since the vacuum can be drawn through the mesh.
