Alternate Method for Online Registration of DOS Applications

This article describes a method for OfficeVision*/2
(OV/2) to allow users to register DOS programs onto the Office
Desktop On-Line.

In today's marketplace, more DOS based business applications
exist than OV/2 applications.  Because businesses have already
invested heavily in DOS software and in training personnel to use
existing DOS software, they want to be able to continue to use these
applications to recoup their investment.  In addition, it will take a
certain amount of time before most applications have dual DOS/OV2
mode availability and users are unwilling to to give up their DOS
based applications in the meantime.  Users want to use OV/2 1.2's
multitasking capability and still be able to run their DOS
applications in the OV/2 DOS box.  They also expect full DOS-OV/2 1.2
compatibility.  This compatibility will increase the usability and
acceptability of OV/2 1.2 in the business workplace.

OV/2 1.2 needs to provide users with a simple way to
dynamically register and run DOS based applications from OV/2, even
if the registration method differs slightly from that for registering
OV/2 applications. A DOS launch program will be provided by OV/2 1.2
and can be named, for example, 'DOSSTART.EXE'.  The DOS application
name will not be specified as an application path, like the OV/2
program is. Instead, it will be specified as an application PARAMETER
for the launch application.
