Zero Defect Hub Insertion

      This article describes a process and tool to
automatically heat a bearing and insert a hubshaft used for
manufacturing of a head disk assembly (HDA).

      Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2 are front and side
views, respectively, of the tool of this disclosure. The machine
operator places the hubshaft 1 on holder 2. After the operator
presses the start button, cylinder 3 raises heater 4 to heat bearing
5 on the HDA base unit 6.  The heater will heat the bearing and the
bearing must expand .001 mm all around so that the hubshaft can be
inserted.  The heater 4 must stay concentric while moving up and
heating the bearing 5.  The heater 4 element is designed to produce a
uniform heat to the total bearing surface so that the surface can be
expanded for the same amount all around.  The temperature is 180oC
 5 and the heating time is 45 seconds.  The goal is to heat the
bearing 5 inner race to 68oC  2.  This is measured without grease
in the bearing as this is the set up on the calibrator.  Actual race
temperature due to the cooling effect of the grease is approximately
49oC.  The time is held constant and the temperature is varied
between 175 and 185oC to reach the goal.  After heating, cylinder 7
lowers the hubshaft 1 and pushes it against the heater 4 while the
heater cylinder 3 still has air.  The hubshaft 1 is held by the
