Abstract

Reel-to-reel tape drives can have an air compressor which is used to provide pressurized air to hydrostatic air bearings in the tape path. These hydrostatic air bearings levitate the tape on a thin layer of air in order to greatly reduce friction and wear in the tape path.

Emissions

      Reel-to-reel tape drives can have an air compressor which
is used to provide pressurized air to hydrostatic air bearings in the
tape path.  These hydrostatic air bearings levitate the tape on a
thin layer of air in order to greatly reduce friction and wear in the
tape path.

      When previously used, such air compressors were set in
manufacturing to provide maximum air pressure so that such tape
drives will operate at very high altitudes, such as 3,000 meters
(10,000 feet).  A pneumatic regulator then reduces the pressure to
operational needs.

      Some problems with this current set-up are that the pneumatic
regulator (a) is costly, (b) takes up volume in the box, and (c)
makes noise as it vents unneeded pressure to the surrounding
atmosphere.  Other problems are that the compressor (d) is working
harder than it needs to and (e) is making more noise than it needs to
because it must provide air pressure suitable for operation at an
altitude of 3,000 meters and such air pressure is excessive at any
lower altitude.

      To counter the above problems, a servoed air compressor is
proposed, one driven with a brushless DC motor.  By servoing the air
compressor so that only the required air pressure is supplied, a
pneumatic regulator is no longer needed.  This reduces cost by
