Method for Determining the Code Page Used by an Application

A method is described which allows an application which
normally uses operating system functions to determine the active code
page to adapt to an environment which does not provide that service.

When a distributed software program consists of a client
program and a server program, which may operate on different
operating systems or in different operating environments, and when
text data must be passed between the client and server programs, and
when it is required that the code page used to map the data must be
the same as that used to map existing data on the server, a method
must be used to determine the code page with which the text data must
be mapped.  This method assumes that the application program which
requests service from the client program must do the translations and
that the code pages involved may be different from those supported by
the operating environment upon which the client must operate.

A configuration file is created on the client workstation which
is associated only with the client program and is independent of any
operating system or operating environment configuration files.  A
parameter is defined in the client configuration file  which
specifies the code page which is to be used to map data that is
passed to the server.  If the code page specified in the
configuration file parameter is not the same as that which is
associated with the server data, the...
