Abstract

In optical data communications the data internal to the computer, which is generally in parallel form, must be transmitted over the optical fiber, which is a serial communications medium. This is typically done by encoding the parallel data to be transmitted and then serializing the encoded parallel data for transmission over the optical fiber. At the receiving end, the process is reversed. The serial data is typically at ten times the rate of the parallel data. In order to maintain a low communications error rate the serializer/deserializer function is usually packaged adjacent to the optical/electrical transducer modules to keep the connections short. If the overall machine packaging does not allow for this option, the serial data must be transmitted to a distant location in the machine.

transmission over the optical fiber.  At the receiving end, the
process is reversed.  The serial data is typically at ten times the

transmission with minimal impact on the signal purity using typically
available cabling components.

      The most important parameter to be maintained is the timing of
the signal crossing of the serial data.  This requires that
transmission line reflections must not arrive at the receiving end of
the connection during the signal transition.  This may be
accomplished by using a properly terminated matched impedance
transmission system. Discontinuities should be minimized.
