Abstract

Insertion or removal of a MICRO CHANNEL*-based I/O bus adapter requires that all power and signal activity on the host be terminated to avoid circuit damage and bus signal corruption. Given today's multiuser/multitasking host computer operating environment, feature service down time must be minimized. A means to control I/O bus isolation via system software would allow rapid feature adapter isolation/testing/replacement without impacting other host activity. IMPLEMENTATION

MICRO Channel I/O Adapter Bus Signal Switching

Insertion or removal of a MICRO CHANNEL*-based I/O bus
adapter requires that all power and signal activity on the host be
terminated to avoid circuit damage and bus signal corruption.  Given
today's multiuser/multitasking host computer operating environment,
feature service down time must be minimized.  A means to control I/O
bus isolation via system software would allow rapid feature adapter
isolation/testing/replacement without impacting other host activity.
IMPLEMENTATION

This implementation isolates all I/O bus signals in a given
slot with a bank of software-controllable bilateral analog switches
and voltage supply relays.  By code sequencing these switches, a
given feature adapter can be gracefully added or removed from the
host bus without interfering with ongoing host operation.  This has
proven beneficial in RISC System/6000* feature development and
functional verification testing.

By multiplexing the bus interrupt and arbitration signal lines
on this fixture, feature configuration testing flexibility was also
improved.  The figure illustrates the configuration prototyped.
