Abstract

The conductive paste manufacturing process requires a high degree of accuracy and traceability. The process involves the accurate weighing and combining of liquid and power materials and the addition of physical work and heat into the mixtures. Raw materials are purchased in large lots which must fall within specified physical properties. Lot- to-lot variations can ultimately affect the physical properties of the final paste product.

Paste Manufacturing Process Traceability

      The conductive paste manufacturing process requires a
high degree of accuracy and traceability.  The process involves the
accurate weighing and combining of liquid and power materials and the
addition of physical work and heat into the mixtures.  Raw materials
are purchased in large lots which must fall within specified physical
properties.  Lot- to-lot variations can ultimately affect the
physical properties of the final paste product.

      In the production of paste the large lots of materials are
subdivided, combined, physically manipulated and tested several times
prior to completion of the final conductive paste product.  It is
essential that the process is accurate to within specified
parameters, that material lot numbers and process parameters are
collected for correlation to product performance, and that in-process
testing prevents out of tolerance paste from being further processed
or shipped to the customer.

      To accomplish these goals an automated factory control system
was put in place which specifically dealt with the application of
paste manufacturing in a batch operation.
      Physically the system consisted of:
