Copper Cladding of Aluminum Piece With Deep Holes

      Disclosed is a means of metallurgically bonding a uniform
layer of copper on one or more sides of an aluminum piece with deep
holes, as shown in Fig. 1.

      The cladding process disclosed is as follows:  The aluminum
piece to be clad with copper is chemically cleaned in an appropriate
solution.  Copper cylinders, of diameter such that they can slip fit
into the holes in aluminum and of length such that their tops are
flush with the top of the aluminum piece, are machined and cleaned in
an appropriate solution.  The copper cylinders are inserted into the
holes in the aluminum piece, which is then surrounded by copper
plates of appropriate sizes, as shown in Fig. 2.  The copper plates
are electron beam welded in a vacuum chamber so as to hermetically
seal the assembly.  The sealed assembly is then hot isostatically
pressed to achieve metallurgical bonds at all the interfaces in the
assembly.  Copper is then machined to obtain a copper clad aluminum
piece, as shown in Fig.  1.

      The above-described principles can be applied to the
manufacture of an integral cold plate for a thermal conduction
module.  As illustrated in Fig. 3, the copper clad holes 302 provide
cavities into which water jets are sprayed for cooling.  On the
opposite side of the hat, cavities 304 for pistons 306 are machined
into the aluminum between the copper clad holes 302.  These cavities
