Abstract

When a system or adapter claims to comply with the Micro Channel* architecture (MCA) specification, they are claiming to meet a wide range of timing and error-handling specifications. Available adapters rarely cause timing conditions at the specification limits or unusual error conditions. The Micro Channel Stress card, with an attached adapter card, can be used to force bus timings to the limits of the MCA spec and to create specific bus errors by delaying selected signals. The Micro Channel Stress card attaches between any Level C Micro Channel connector and a Micro Channel adapter (see Fig. 1). The card has programmable stress characteristics to delay signals driven by the attached adapter card to the System Bus Master or responding Slave.

Micro Channel Stress Card

      When a system or adapter claims to comply with the Micro
Channel* architecture (MCA) specification, they are claiming to meet
a wide range of timing and error-handling specifications.  Available
adapters rarely cause timing conditions at the specification limits
or unusual error conditions.  The Micro Channel Stress card, with an
attached adapter card, can be used to force bus timings to the limits
of the MCA spec and to create specific bus errors by delaying
selected signals.  The Micro Channel Stress card attaches between any
Level C Micro Channel connector and a Micro Channel adapter (see Fig.
1).  The card has programmable stress characteristics to delay
signals driven by the attached adapter card to the System Bus Master
or responding Slave.  The stress characteristics are programmable
through a parallel port on the Stress card and no special software in
the system under test is necessary to attach the Stress card.

      Although the existing Micro Channel Stress Card delays signals
driven by the attached adapter card, the logic could be easily
'flipped' to delay signals driven to the attached adapter card.

      The MC Stress card will read the initialization information
written to the POS registers on the attached adapter card during the
set-up cycle to determine the type of adapter that is attached.  If
the attached adapter is a Bus Master, the MC Stress card reads the
initialization information written to the POS register during the
set-up cycle to determine the arbitration level of the adapter that
is attached.  When the attached adapter 'wins' the arbitration and
obtains ownership of the bus, the Micro Channel Stress card will
re-drive the address, data and control signals using the
pre-programmed stress characteristics.  Any number of signals may be
delayed at one time since a delay value is stored in the Delay Select
Registers and remains unchanged until reset through the Parallel
Port.  When the attached adapter is a Bus Master, the Micro Channel
Stress card can also be used to vary the I/O bus timings to other
