Abstract

To attach or realign grippers to a robot arm, an alignment tool is temporarily attached to the robot arm which provides accurate positioning for each of two grippers relative to the robot arm and to each other. By using an alignment tool of the generic type described, time to replace or realign gripper plates is minimized.

Robot Gripper Alignment Tool

      To attach or realign grippers to a robot arm, an alignment tool
is temporarily attached to the robot arm which provides accurate
positioning for each of two grippers relative to the robot arm and to
each other.  By using an alignment tool of the generic type
described, time to replace or realign gripper plates is minimized.

      The figure shows an end view and a side view of robot arm 6
with grippers 2 and 4, and having alignment tool 8 attached.  Hidden
features are not shown in the side view. Bolts H, which hold grippers
2 and 4 to robot arm 6, are not tight during an alignment operation.
Alignment tool 8 is preassembled into a form indicated by hatching.
Tool 8 is aligned to robot arm 6 by precision locators, e.g., taper
pins 10 and mating surfaces on the top of fixture 8 and the bottom of
robot arm 6 when retainer bolt 12 is tightened. Grippers 2 and 4 are
each manually held in contact with three alignment contact points P
while gripper holding screws are tightened.  Thus, grippers 2 and 4
are secured in proper relationship to each other and to robot arm 6.

      Alignment fixture 8 is removed after removing bolt 12.

      Any or all of alignment points P may be made adjustable or
formed solidly into the alignment fixture as shown.
