Dynamic Icons for Information Visualization

      Provided is a technique for creating and maintaining icons of
dynamically varying size and features in order to overcome
deficiencies with conventional approaches of data visualization.

      Users are provided with conventional icon functionality.
However, the following enhancements are provided:
O  Icons of variable and dynamic size
O  Icon size dependent upon quantitative and variable data
O  Icon size varying in either length, width, depth
O  Direct manipulation of the icon borders dynamically changes icon
size in either dimension
O  The data driving the icon's size is automatically changed as
direct manipulation occurs

      Other data-driven parameters can be controlled via the position
of the icon, i.e., its spatial relationship to other objects, data,
or icons.  Spatial conditions can control other features of an icon,
and as the value of the icon's data or position changes, size and
other visual features of the icon change to reflect the data.

      Benefits to the end user include new functionality, improved
visualization of data, improved visualization of non-data features of
information, reduced worksteps in modifying data via interaction with
graphical objects.
