Techinques for Automated Progressive Learning

Provided is a technique for progressive revelation and
instruction of system capabilities and consequent user interface
customization in order to solve problems with current
implementations.

Initially, users are provided with a conventional system user
interface in "short menu" form.  In addition, users are provided with
a new "Progressive Learning and Customization" facility with the
following features:
O  A system usage monitor which tracks system capabilities employed
by the user, e.g., menu usage, action usage, use of controls and
techniques, etc.
O  The usage monitor also tracks system features not used and
features used extensively.
O  Based upon the monitor, the end-user is prompted each day about
learning a new system feature.
O  If the user elects to learn about a feature, then the system
displays a "learn about" window, which provides a tutorial on a
provided feature, including access.  When completed, the user is
prompted about adding the feature in the user interface.
O  Optionally, other features can be studied instead of the system
provided feature.

Based upon frequency of use, some features of the interface can
be modified for more expert use.  The end user also has options to
disable the monitor, re-review previously studied topics, and modify
frequency of tutorials.

The benefits of these techniques include new functionality,
quicker initial use of the system, no...
