Overwritable Exchange Coupled Four Layer Magneto-optic Medium

      Disclosed is an overwritable magneto-optic medium which
consists of four exchange-coupled magneto-optic layers.

      The overwritable exchange-coupled four-layer magneto-optic
medium disclosed in the figure offers better performance over a
three-layer exchange-coupled overwritable magneto-optic medium.  The
improvement is achieved by the addition of the 'auxiliary reference
layer' in the figure. The Curie temperature of the 'reference layer'
has to be much higher than that of the 'memory layer', and the room
temperature coercivity of the 'memory layer' has to be significantly
larger than that of the 'reference layer' (or, more precisely, the
composite of the 'reference layer' and the 'auxiliary reference
layer' for the four-layer structure disclosed here).

      A low initializing field requires the composition of the
'reference layer' to be significantly off from the one that is known
to be the optimum for the best domain quality. The composition
offering the best written domains is very close to the compensation
composition and therefore has a room temperature coercivity too high
for the 'reference layer' of these exchange- coupled structures. With
the addition of the 'auxiliary reference layer' disclosed here, the
composition of the 'reference layer' can be much closer to the
