Heads

      A 4-lead magnetoresistive MR sensor element is described to be
able to provide both data and servo information for high track
density magnetic tape storage systems. It is applicable to formats
that employ sector servo information wherein, along the length of the
track, data and servo information is written in separate sections.

      Given a 4-lead MR element with center leads 2 and 3, and outer
leads 1 and 4, the dimensions are such that the distance between 2
and 3 is less than the written track width and the distance between 1
and 4 is greater than the written track width.  Data information is
thus obtained from V(23) while servo information is obtained from
V(13) - V(24). The sector servo written signal can be of single
frequency, whereby the location of the servo signal is displaced
along the length of tape for adjacent tracks, or, of dual frequency
alternating between adjacent tracks. Either scheme prevents adjacent
track interference.
