Sorting X.400 Mail Items

This article describes the "Sort By" operation for
sorting incoming X.400 mail items.  This operation provides the
capability for users to specify two attributes for sorting the X.400
ipms (interpersonal messages).

In OfficeVision*/2 (OV/2), users may arrange mail items in the
in-basket in a different order by the use of "Sort By" under the
"View" pull-down menu.  This sorting of mail items is limited in that
only one attribute is used to sort. For example, mail items may be
sorted by sender but may not be sorted by sender and within sender by
priority.

The EUI for "Sort By" that we propose is shown in the figure.
The dialog box consists of a "primary" list box, a radio button field
for the primary sort order, a "secondary" list box, and a radio
button field for the secondary sort order.  The "primary" list box
contains X.400 attributes that the user may wish to use for the
primary sort and a "User Profile Default".  The "User Profile
Default" is a user- specified default order that is stored in the
user profile.  The primary sort may be in ascending or descending
order.  The "secondary" list box also contains X.400 attributes that
the user may select for the secondary sort. The secondary sort may be
in ascending or descending order.

A number of pushbuttons are available to the user:
Sort   - for applying the sort operation
Cancel - for exiting the dialog box without performing "sort
by" Help   -...
