Abstract

Disclosed is a device that allows hand placement of quadpacks with ceramic lids on printed wiring boards for vapor phase solder attachment. It solves the placement problems of limited positional control, lead damage from using rigid placement devices, and misalignment caused when adding the weight needed for vapor phase soldering to the quadpack top.

Quadpack Handling/ Mass Device for Quadpacks With Ceramic Lids

      Disclosed is a device that allows hand placement of
quadpacks with ceramic lids on printed wiring boards for vapor phase
solder attachment.  It solves the placement problems of limited
positional control, lead damage from using rigid placement devices,
and misalignment caused when adding the weight needed for vapor phase
soldering to the quadpack top.

      Finger grips 1 are squeezed together to open spring-loaded
hinge assembly 7.  Jaws 2 are placed over the ceramic lid 3 of the
quadpack 4, and the arms 1 are released, allowing the jaws to clamp
on the lid.  The device handle 8 is fastened to retaining rod 6 with
ball chain 9 permitting all other device components to float with
respect to the handle.

      By lifting the handle 8, the suspended captive quadpack 4 can
be placed on the printed wiring board with these advantages:
      o    The device permits rotational and X, Y, Z axis control
during placement.
      o    The sum of the weights of the quadpack 4 and all device
components (except 8 and 9) is not large enough to deform the
quadpack leads 5 during board contact.
      o    The floating action provided by the ball chain 9 allows
the quadpack to self-level during placement, and prevents lead damage
by rigid placement.
      o    The handle 8 and chain 9 is set on rod 6 after placement.
