      Disclosed is an icon for Terminal Emulation Update within
the Operating System/2 (OS/2*) Extended Edition (E.E.), Version 1.2,
Communications Manager (see the figure).

      Graphical interfaces rely on direct manipulation interface
techniques. These techniques have become standard in the industry and
are based on the ability to represent objects in the user interface.
These representations often take the form of icons.  An icon is a
pictorial representation of an object.  The icon design should invoke
in the user an understanding of the purpose or use of the object it
represents.  An icon for the IBM OS/2 E.E., Version 1.2, 3270
Terminal Emulation Update was required for use in the Presentation
Manager*- based application.

      The OS/2 E.E., Version 1.2, Communications Manager, Terminal
Emulation Update icon is the minimized state of 3270 emulation, ASCII
emulation, or 5250 Work Station Feature.

      The two types of emulation supported by Communications Manager
and represented by the Terminal Emulation icon are: 3270 terminal
emulation (windowed) and ASCII terminal emulation (windowed). 5250
Work Station Feature (full-screen panel) is also supported.

      The Terminal Emulation Update icon differs from the Terminal
Emulation icon by the following: when the emulator receives a screen
update, e.g., a message received, the Terminal Emulation icon ch...
