Abstract

Described is a method for verification of communications configuration in a Client/Server environment. Communications information from the Server must be entered on the Client in order to configure communications using APPC. This method describes verification of this information on the client during the configuration process by starting communications on the client and testing the parameters during configuration.

Verification of Client/ Server Communications Configuration

Described is a method for verification of communications
configuration in a Client/Server environment. Communications
information from the Server must be entered on the Client in order to
configure communications using APPC.  This method describes
verification of this information on the client during the
configuration process by starting communications on the client and
testing the parameters during configuration.

The method used to solve this problem is to enhance the PC
Support DOS Installation program to provide an option to verify the
communication parameters entered on the programmable workstation
(PWS) against those configured on the AS/400* for that PWS.  This
will be an option the user may choose when Installation has completed
on the PWS.  When this option is taken, the Installation program will
invoke communications using the PWS configuration parameters.  If the
connection fails, then full error cause and recovery help messages
will be displayed for the user. At this point, the user can change
the appropriate parameters and try again.

The invention allows the user the option of verifying the
parameters.  If this option is selected, then the Install program
will start a DOS shell to load and execute the communications
program.  Any errors that occur will be reflected with error messages
returned in an ASCII file and via batch return code.  If an error
occurs, then th...
