Abstract

Described is a group of methods that enhance the usability of the current OS/2* Communications Manager keyboard remapping utility, thereby increasing user productivity. These methods include dynamically updating the target states during a remap action, allowing selected states of a key to be either copied, moved, or swapped with corresponding states of another key, and the ability to dynamically update and print the keyboard profile associated with an emulation session without exiting the emulator. A "state" of a key is the area in which the action that occurs when that key is pressed, alone or in conjunction with a modifier key (shift, ctrl, alt, etc.) is defined.

Key Definition Remap and Update Operations

Described is a group of methods that enhance the
usability of the current OS/2* Communications Manager keyboard
remapping utility, thereby increasing user productivity. These
methods include dynamically updating the target states during a remap
action, allowing selected states of a key to be either copied, moved,
or swapped with corresponding states of another key, and the ability
to dynamically update and print the keyboard profile associated with
an emulation session without exiting the emulator.  A "state" of a
key is the area in which the action that occurs when that key is
pressed, alone or in conjunction with a modifier key (shift, ctrl,
alt, etc.) is defined.

Because the application in which this invention is being
implemented runs under the OS/2 Presentation Manager*, the utility
will present the user with a graphical representation of the keyboard
and will allow keys on which to operate to be selected with the mouse
or keyboard.  Part of the display area for the application is used
for a dynamic display of the key states for the key that is currently
under the mouse cursor, allowing the user to see the current
definition of all the states for that key and decide whether it is a
suitable or desired target for the current operation.

This method provides the user the ability to select single or
multiple states of a key which can be copied, moved, or swapped with
corresponding states of anothe...
