Abstract

An electronic checkbook is a small limited function computer with a constant memory. It is about the size of a paper checkbook register which it replaces by storing a month or more of activity on a checking account. The electronic checkbook also has an interface so the information can be uploaded to a desktop computer for processing.

Electronic Checkbook

      An electronic checkbook is a small limited function
computer with a constant memory.  It is about the size of a paper
checkbook register which it replaces by storing a month or more of
activity on a checking account.  The electronic checkbook also has an
interface so the information can be uploaded to a desktop computer
for processing.

      The small computer is about 6" X 3" X 3/8".  It has an LCD
display that is about 5.5" X 1/2" which is divided into 5 horizontal
segments.  Each segment's purpose and size is as follows numbered
from left to right:
      check number - 4 characters
      date         - 8 characters
      description  - 40 characters and a single small
                     triangle
      amount       - 10 characters
      balance      - 10 characters and a number of small
                     triangles

      In addition, the description field has a single small triangle
that can appear in the upper right corner to indicate tax
deductibility, and the balance field has a number of small triangles
each placed beneath a number on the case indicating which of the
supported budget entries the item falls under.  See the figure for
the exact layout.

      The keyboard is a membrane type about 5.5" X 2" including all
26 letters, 10 digits, space bar, tab key, backspace, up arrow, down
arrow, some special characters, and 3 special keys -- TAX for tax
deductibility, DEP for deposits, and CAT for specifying budget
category.
