Arbitrarily Located Transform Service

      This article describes a design for a transform service
in a heterogeneous network of many different connected systems. The
methodology described allows for the transform service to be
arbitrarily located within a network.

      Transforms are best performed by the receiving work station
when an end user interface (EUI), editor application or any other
rendering application must work with the received item. Optimally,
distributions are sent and handled as is. A transform should only
occur when necessary, at the receiver. Coexistence with systems which
do not support doing receiver-based (requester) transforms means the
requester-based transform service should be available for use when
sending out from the requester or server. Typical to many systems,
sender transforms are implemented to work around the receivers
incapable of doing receiver transforms. Implementation
inconsistencies and differences in resource capabilities make a
transform service which is accessible by a variety of environments
appealing. The transform service is optimally located on requester or
server machines where applications need it.  However, this article
describes the transform service transparently available through the
LAN via NETBIOS so any machine lacking the resources for a local copy
of the transform service can call it remotely. The transform service
