Abstract

Described are modifications to a laser Doppler anemometer (LDA). The modified LDA permits measurements of flow velocity over extended or hard to access regions of spaces without the need to physically relocate the optical setup or the test object. The modified scheme, shown in the figure, consists of a two-dimensional wobble scanning galvo mirror, and an actuated lens in the beam path. The wobble scanning galvo mirror, providing telecentric scanning, offers transverse scanning (relative to the symmetry axis of the optical components) while the actuated lens allows longitudinal scanning.

      Described are modifications to a laser Doppler anemometer
(LDA).  The modified LDA permits measurements of flow velocity over
extended or hard to access regions of spaces without the need to
physically relocate the optical setup or the test object.  The
modified scheme, shown in the figure, consists of a two-dimensional
wobble scanning galvo mirror, and an actuated lens in the beam path.
The wobble scanning galvo mirror, providing telecentric scanning,
offers transverse scanning (relative to the symmetry axis of the
optical components) while the actuated lens allows longitudinal
scanning.

      In a conventional LDA, the optical axis and the bisecting axis
of the two laser beams are coincident with the symmetry axis of the
optical components.  Blockage of either one of the laser beams may
occur in near wall regions that restrict the LDA measurements.

      By allowing the bisecting axis of the laser beams to be
different from the symmetry axis of the optical components permits
velocity measurements in hard to access regions of the test object.
